PROGRAM

tbd – lots of great choices!

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Kristen Uthus studied both plant and animal ecology and evolution at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the Ohio State University (OSU).  She then taught biology and ecology at several colleges including VCU, OSU, University of Michigan, and Eastern Michigan University.  The daughter of a plant fanatic, Kristen has been growing orchids for over 20 years, and in 2014 she fulfilled her dream of making orchids a full-time commitment by purchasing NWO.

Although she enjoys growing many varieties of orchids and other plants, miniatures remain her passion—the weirder the better.  New World Orchids specializes in Japanese species including Neofinetia falcata, Dendrobium moniliforme, and Sederia japonica as well as Asian Cymbidium species, but her miniature selection has been expanding to include many other small species including Pleurothallids, Bulbophyllums, and Angraecums.  Although not ever entirely up to date, you can check out some of NWO’s offerings at www.newworldorchids.com.

Kristen lives in Manchester, MI, about an hour west of Detroit.  She is supported in her orchid pursuits by her husband, Dr. Kevin Wehrly, her two sons, Henry and Gus, and a veritable menagerie of lovable animals.

In our September meeting, Judy Bailey (AOS Judge) will present a workshop on how to prepare plants to be judged.

Francisco is a much sought-after speaker on Brazilian orchids. We have visited his nursery on west coast rambles, where we saw his amazing laelia collection and a huge variety of bifoliate cattleyas.

Francisco Miranda was born in Rio de Janeiro on February 6, 1956. He got his degree in Biology and begun his taxonomic studies in the orchid family in 1981. During the next 4 years, he lived most of the time in Manaus where he studied Amazon orchids and began his Master’s degree. Shortly after returning to Rio de Janeiro, the Master’s was completed on “section Cattleyodes of the genus Laelia” . Since then, the main interest has been on the Brazilian laelias and cattleyas.

He is the author of several papers ranging from species descriptions to subjects of growers’ interest in Brazilian,  German and U.S. publications. He is also author of two books.

Since 2000, he lives in Haines City, Florida, where he operates Miranda Orchids, an orchid nursery specializing on Brazilian species and the Cattleya alliance. He also guides trips to Brazil and frequently visits Brazilian habitats to find new and/or interesting orchid species.

His presentation for our meeting is “The genus Cattleya in Brazil – country tour

It’s that time of the year again! Our August meeting will be a Movie Night.

  • We will provide treats! No cooking required this month!
  • We will have our regular raffle table and plant judging.

The movie will be “Wild Orchid Man In The Ghost Orchid Swamp”, about our native orchid, Dendrophylax lindenii

Wild Orchid Man In The Ghost Orchid Swamp

Dalström and Saffer trek deep into the heart of the Everglades to Florida’s wildest swamp, the Fakahatchee, home to the rare Ghost Orchid, Dendrophylax lindenii. Swarms of mosquitos, alligators and snakes, poison ivy and fierce storms seem to guard the rare and mysterious orchids hiding there.

If you’ve been on a Fakahatchee slog with us this will bring back good memories. If not, this is what you have to look forward to!

Our annual auction is a fun fundraiser for FLOS. We alway have a great selection of plants from our favorite orchid vendors and donations from FLOS members.

This year we will also be auctioning orchids from the Miriam Burtoff Collection. Miriam (known as Mary back in the day) was a long-time FLOS member and orchid collector with impeccable taste. She recently donated her collection to FLOS, which we deeply appreciate. There are many amazing plants on this list.

We will have a donation check-in table this year. Please drop your donations off with Zoe and Kate when you arrive.

The auction starts at 7:00PM. Registration starts at 6:30.
