Segundo Cuesta: Growing Cattleyas in South Florida

Cattleyas are Segundo Cuesta’s passion.
The long-time Miami grower, who owns Quest Orchids with his wife Yolanda, will present “Growing Cattleyas in South Florida” at our monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8. His program will cover culture, disease and pest control of the beloved plants.
Segundo started collecting orchids after graduating from Florida International University in 1980, and started hybridizing orchids in 1984. His goal was to make new crosses of compact cattleyas with art-shade tones which feature strikingly vibrant color combinations with contrasting lips.
Segundo and Yolanda founded Quest Orchids in 1994. While they specialize in Cattleyas, the couple also grow many orchid species, including Vandas, in their 50,000-square-foot greenhouse.
