Meeting October 8, 2018 – Orchid Auction

Our annual auction is a fun fundraiser for FLOS. We alway have a great selection of plants from our favorite orchid vendors and donations from FLOS members.

This year we will also be auctioning orchids from the Miriam Burtoff Collection. Miriam (known as Mary back in the day) was a long-time FLOS member and orchid collector with impeccable taste. She recently donated her collection to FLOS, which we deeply appreciate. There are many amazing plants on this list.

We will have a donation check-in table this year. Please drop your donations off with Zoe and Kate when you arrive.

The auction starts at 7:00PM. Registration starts at 6:30.

AUCTIONEER – Mac Rivenbark

Meeting April 9, 2018 – Roy Tokunaga

Roy Tokunaga will be our April 2018 speaker. It is after hurricane season! Roy says:

I grew up on the beautiful island of Maui, in the Hawaiian Island chain. I left Maui for Honolulu, Oahu to attend the University of Hawaii. It was in the honors program, my favorite mentor, Dr. Yoneo Sagawa, introduced me to Orchids and the new emerging technology of Orchid
seed germination and cloning. I eventually earned a Bachelors in Education, to teach biology. I was recruited to work at an Orchid
cloning laboratory, E&R Orchids. For seven years I honed my skills in seed germination and cloning. In 1981, I partnered with Harry Akagi to start H&R Nurseries in Waimanalo, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. I am an accredited judge for the American Orchid Society as well as the Honolulu Orchid Society.

Today, I have been hybridizing, cloning, and germinating seeds for more than 40 years. H&R maintains a laboratory to do its seed germination and grows Orchids under two acres of shade houses. I have been refocusing H&R to excel in the culture of species as well as providing hybrids in the Dendrobium and Cattleya Alliance. My passion has been the proper nutrition of Orchids and the mythical flower booster. I am working on a power point program to share my discoveries.

Meeting November 13, 2017 – ShowTime!

For 65 years, our members and local growers have entered plants for judging by prestigious AOS Judges from all over the world.  Many members have won blue ribbons, and even named an orchid.  As our Jubilee Show approaches we are gearing up to prepare our special plants for blooming, presentation and judging.  Our November speakers; Joan Connors, Carol Holdren and Jackie Wood will help us pick out our best orchids and prepare them for the show. They will also explain how displays are designed and judged.

The program starts at 7:30 p.m.

Meeting – July 11, 2016 – Bill Thoms

Renowned orchid grower, world traveler and internationally recognized speaker Bill Thoms will be presenting a talk on Bulbophyllums (the largest genus in the orchid world!) Be prepared to learn more about this fascinating group of plants than you ever dreamed!

Bill Thoms and his wife, Doris Dukes, have been growing orchids around Central Florida for almost 40 years and have received almost every award granted by the AOS as well as more Awards for Culture than anyone else in the world, (83 in over 26 genera, including 36 in the bulbophyllum alliance (capped off with a 96 pt. Certificate of Cultural Excellence for Bulb. Frank Smith ‘The King’).

Bill is the only person to receive an Award of Quality for a Bulbophyllum hybrid (named for Doris) as well as receiving the hybridizer’s dream; an Award of Distinction for a new avenue of breeding (a Trias hybrid). Many of his crosses are winning awards around the country. The AOS has just added a yearly award named for him for the best Bulbophyllum exhibited.

His talks are spiced with funny stories and funny associations. Whether you grow thousands of orchids, only a few, or none at all, you will have a wonderfully entertaining time and be able to grow anything better. Many of the most important requirements for growing world class plants are made easy to understand and remember.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn how to grow these fascinating plants and to hear one of the most knowledgeable, interesting and funny speakers in the orchid world.

His new book, Bulbophyllums; the Incomplete Guide, From A to WHY? will be available for purchase ($44.95) and he will sign them for free.
